Evaluating Condition & Mint Marks
Numismatics is often the gateway into serious collecting. Coins are robust, well-documented, and hold intrinsic material value alongside their historical significance. For beginners, the focus should initially be on understanding mint marks and grading basics rather than chasing pure rarity.
The Importance of Mint Marks
A mint mark is a small letter (or symbol) stamped onto a coin to indicate the facility where it was struck. In the US, for example, 'D' stands for Denver, and 'S' for San Francisco. In the UK, the Royal Mint has its own historic identifying features. Finding a low-mintage coin from a specific mint can turn common pocket change into a fascinating collectible.
Standard Grading Scale
From Poor (PO-1) to Perfect Mint State (MS-70). Beginners usually collect in the Very Fine (VF-20) to About Uncirculated (AU-50) range.
Cleaning Warning
Never polish your coins. Chemical dipping destroys the original patina and plummets value.
